A Walk from Purfleet

The Thames Path from Purfleet downstream to Hayes takes one through a strange world of mud flats, industrial sites, abandonded jetties and derelict loading bays where one seems to be viewing the surroundings from an unexpected even illegal angle. One feels like a trespasser on a public path. At times the river is hidden as one walks between a concrete barrier on one side and razor wire fencing on the other. At other points the river stretchs out with shipping and docks visible out beyond the mud at low tide. Despite this being an environment dominated by concrete and tarmac the natural world encroachs on the path itself with an unexpected number of wild flowers. This set of photographs record a single day’s walk through this other-world.
