Music

I have been blowing down bits of wood and metal since I was eight when I got my first clarinet and began having lessons. At that time it was thought a wind instrument would strength my lungs and thus help to alleviate the asthma that made me a rake-thin hunch-shouldered weakling. By the age of 13 I was playing in the school orchestra and had also acquired a tenor sax, a brute of an instrument picked up cheap somewhere off Tottenham Court Road. Now almost a lifetime later I play clarinet, bass clarinet and alto sax and still think a long session is a good workout that will help to keep me breathing and alive a bit longer.
